National grain operator JSC NC Food Contract Corporation and the United Nations Development Programme in Kazakhstan signed a cooperation agreement on sustainable agricultural production, the implementation of environmentally friendly farming practices, and the conservation of ecosystems in Northern Kazakhstan, APK News reports, citing the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture.

As part of the agreement, UNDP is providing grant funding totaling approximately $2 million. The funds will be used for scientific support of the pilot project, involving local and international specialists, as well as to reimburse the operator and farmers for program implementation costs.

The partnership with UNDP provides forward financing for three years to agricultural producers for the cultivation of legumes and perennial grasses, including lentils and alfalfa. In return, farmers will use modern agricultural technologies, maintain crop rotation, and diversify their cropland.

"By combining the efforts of government institutions and international partners, we aim to strengthen Kazakhstan's food security and support farmers in their transition to environmentally friendly and financially sustainable farming practices," noted UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan Katarzyna Wawiernia during the agreement signing.

The project will include scientific and marketing research to identify promising crops for cultivation in Northern Kazakhstan and optimal export markets for agricultural products. Each farm participating in the project will receive recommendations from international and Kazakhstani scientists.

"Kazakhstan is the first country in Central Asia to join this program. When reviewing potential partners, UNDP took into account UNDP's practical experience in financing and supporting agricultural producers. Since the Food Corporation possesses the necessary expertise in agricultural production, the decision was made in favor of the national operator," said Asylkhan Dzhuvashev, Chairman of the Board of JSC NC Food Corporation.

According to him, joint work with UNDP will facilitate the diversification of croplands and the introduction of new incentive mechanisms for agribusiness in Kazakhstan.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the leading UN organization fighting injustices caused by poverty, inequality, and climate change. It works with a broad network of experts and partners in 170 countries.

The Food Systems, Land Use, and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Program is an initiative supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that aims to transform the global food system by promoting resilient, integrated landscapes and efficient commodity value chains.
